Metropolitan Council

Project Intern

May - August 2019 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

I was able to work with engineers and scientists in a variety of fields. I had my own project I was able to research and work on. Working at a WWTP allowed me to learn about the different systems with a hands-on approach.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to go out in the field a do more water quality research.

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunities the Council offers. Talk to people in different departments, go on the intern tours, and explore the events the company puts on for employees.

Got to know more about the Council and its uniqueness as a government institution.

What I wish was different

I hope I had more time to explore other tasks within the Communication department.

Advice

Take initiative and ask your supervisor for other task/project that you are interested in. The Council staffs are all very open-minded and supportive. They will always try to make the best out of an intern's experiences.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Big Lake, MN

What I liked

Everything was incredibly nice and welcoming. Welcome week events were amazing, and getting to learn more about transit operations and interact daily with my users was a great experience. Tons of events for interns like transit-focused tours of Minneapolis/St Paul neighborhoods, networking events and talks, etc.

What I wish was different

The hiring process took quite a while; I didn't hear back until 2 weeks before the start of summer.

Advice

Take this experience and run with it. The Metropolitan Council is an incredibly diverse organization, running everything from Metro Transit to the Twin Cities water treatment system. If you're interested in public service this is a great place to get started and figure out where you want to go.

Project Administration Intern, Metro Mobility

May - August 2018 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

I appreciated the trust I received from others in Metro Mobility. My bosses had no issues assigning me multiple projects at once, which led to a challenging and engaging experience. Also the work environment was very friendly, and I felt comfortable reaching out to anybody in the organization.

What I wish was different

There were some slow days, in which I had little to no work to do. This was quite boring but luckily these days were few and far between.

Advice

The more you put yourself out there and talk to people, the better the chance of being able to find an engaging internship and having a good experience.
