Community Manager

Community Manager at Kanary

Your Impact

Kanary’s community of members comes together across Discord, Reddit, and Youtube. We’re fully funded by our members, so we’re looking for the right person to help us invest back into the community. You’ll work with over 30,000 members to help us strengthen and grow. Our vision is to build a welcoming, trustworthy, and engaging place to discuss the opportunities and challenges that come with online exposure and help each other respond to the risks and demands of chronically online culture.

What does the day to day look like?

Discord Management (80% of your time)

  • Keep a pulse on the community. Run daily polls to learn what people want, how they found Kanary, and what keeps them around.
  • Work fast. Respond to community questions within 60 seconds during community hours (8am–6pm PST). Your response time should beat Rachel’s, our founder 😉.
  • Stay on-brand. Make sure messaging in Discord feels aligned with what people see on our site, socials, and elsewhere.
  • Bring the server to life. Use links, images, gifs, and a strong dose of personality to make every channel feel dynamic and welcoming.
  • Translate tech into human. Edit and simplify weekly product announcements from engineers so they land clearly and with context.
  • Drive community energy. Run monthly giveaways/sweepstakes that reward our most engaged users and attract new ones.
  • Build hype. Tease upcoming features for iOS, Android, and Beta groups. Capture community excitement and channel it back to the team to close the loop.

YouTube Engagement (5% of your time)

  • Engage with Kanary’s audience. Reply to comments on videos within 24 hours to keep the conversation going and build community.
  • Keep the space safe. Flag and remove harmful, spammy, or inappropriate comments to maintain a positive environment.
  • Spot potential collaborators. Identify interesting or interested creators in the comments or Feed and connect them with Anna (Partnerships) and Miranda (GTM Lead) for outreach.
  • Don’t worry about going viral. Mastering the YouTube algo is not a focus, the main focus of our team is to successfully create unique interview-based content that feeds a larger content funnel that builds trust, and converts into product use.

Other Social Engagement (5% of your time)

  • Engage in the comments across channels. Respond to comments within 24 hours on our own posts and partner content to build trust, answer questions, and drive community into our Discord and product.
  • Just like on Discord and YouTube, you’ll keep our brand consistent by aligning bios, screenshots, and features. You’ll also keep an eye out for collaboration opportunities with other creators.
  • This is not a content creation role, your focus will be on community management.

IRL Meetups & Conferences (10% of your time)

  • IRL > URL. Find interesting meetups to attend or support in your city to connect with existing or future Kanary members.
  • Meet the pros. Research, prep, and travel to conferences like Def Con and Twitch Con.
  • Herd cats. Organize meet ups, dinners, happy hours, off sites, and virtual sessions with key partners, members, and team Kanary.

What makes you a good fit?

You’re the kind of person who walks into a room full of strangers and walks out with new friends. In your free time, you’re on Discord, YouTube, or Reddit learning new things and building connections. You’re drawn to opportunities that require a friendly and patient approach to community building. While working at Kanary, you’ll automate the boring stuff while saving your mental energy for traveling, meeting people in cybersecurity, and rapidly expanding your/Kanary’s network.

You have a background in marketing, communications, community organizing, or front-of-house service. With 1–3 years of experience, you’re ready for a role where your energy, people skills, and hustle will directly determine how you grow.

What are the comp & benefits?

  • $60k-$75k salary, full time
  • Fully remote. Folks who are in creator hubs or Kanary hubs may be given preference: Los Angeles, Austin, Seattle, Las Vegas, New York, Washington DC, SF, Chicago
  • Healthcare stipend
  • Fully paid travel to conferences
  • Unlimited vacation, 4 weeks encouraged + scheduled team mental health days
  • 2 meeting free days per week
  • Quarterly in-person off-sites (fully paid) with nice views

What is the interview process?

  1. Resume review
  2. Marketing intro call
  3. Founder intro call
  4. Organizational challenge - prep for a fictional conference
  5. Contract to hire (paid)
  6. Offer

This process takes 3-5 weeks.
