Marketing Intern

Marketing Intern (AI Startup - Publishing Tech)

Company: Story Stream

Location: Remote, Hybrid in Seattle, WA area

Position Type: Internship

Duration & Hours: 2-3 months for approx. 10-15 hours per week. Flexible schedule possible. Potential for extension based on performance and company needs.

About Story Stream:

Story Stream is an early-stage startup developing AI-powered tools for fiction authors. Currently, accessing professional developmental editing—essential feedback on narrative elements like plot, character, and pacing—is often prohibitively expensive ($1,500+) and involves long wait times. Story Stream addresses this by leveraging powerful Large Language Models (LLMs) and a proprietary analysis framework, grounded in established writing craft principles and validated by professional editors. Our system provides authors with in-depth, actionable feedback on the core components of their story, aligned with their specific creative intentions. We focus on substantive narrative analysis, moving beyond simple grammar or style checks.

Currently in MVP development with a planned launch in May 2025, Story Stream aims to make high-quality developmental insights accessible to a wider range of authors.

The Opportunity:

This is a unique opportunity to join a startup on the ground floor and play a key role in shaping its marketing strategy from the beginning! As our Marketing Intern, you'll work directly with the founder(s) to build brand awareness, engage with our target audience (independent fiction authors), and contribute to our launch strategy. You'll gain hands-on experience across various marketing disciplines in a fast-paced, innovative environment at the intersection of AI, technology, and the creative arts.

What You'll Do:

  • Content Creation: Assist in drafting engaging content for our blog, social media channels, and email newsletters, focusing on topics relevant to authors (writing craft, editing, AI tools, publishing). Help implement foundational SEO strategies.
  • Community Engagement: Monitor and participate authentically in key online author communities (like relevant Facebook groups, Reddit subreddits, KBoards) to understand author needs, build relationships, and identify opportunities for Story Stream.
  • Digital Marketing Support: Assist with setting up, monitoring, and analyzing initial paid advertising experiments (e.g., Facebook Ads, Google Search Ads) under guidance. Track key metrics using tools like website analytics and Microsoft Clarity.
  • Market Research: Help identify and research potential micro-influencers, partner organizations (author platforms, editorial groups), and competitor activities.
  • Feedback & Testimonials: Help gather, organize, and potentially format feedback and testimonials from our beta testers.
  • Marketing Operations: Provide general support for marketing initiatives, potentially including helping prepare presentation materials or documentation.

What We're Looking For:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate (Junior/Senior preferred) or graduate student pursuing a degree in Marketing, Communications, English, Business, or a related field.
  • Genuine interest in startups, technology (especially AI), and/or the writing/publishing industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – you can write clearly and engagingly.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proactive, self-starter attitude – you're eager to learn, take initiative, and can work independently (especially if remote).
  • Comfortable using online tools, social media platforms, and standard office software.
  • Based in the US [(Confirm if this is a requirement)].

Bonus Points (Nice to Haves):

  • Previous marketing internship experience or relevant coursework.
  • Familiarity with digital marketing concepts (SEO, content marketing, social media marketing).
  • Experience with writing, editing, or being part of a writing community.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics) or user behavior tools (e.g., Microsoft Clarity).
  • Basic graphic design skills (e.g., Canva).

What You'll Gain:

  • Real-World Startup Experience: See firsthand how a tech company builds its brand and prepares for launch.
  • Direct Mentorship: Work closely with and learn directly from the company founder(s).
  • Diverse Skill Development: Gain practical experience in content marketing, community management, digital advertising, SEO, market research, and analytics.
  • Industry Insight: Learn about the dynamic self-publishing market and the challenges/opportunities for authors.
  • Impact: Your work will directly contribute to our launch success and help authors achieve their goals.
  • Portfolio Building: Create tangible marketing assets and trackable results for your resume/portfolio.
  • Exposure to AI: Understand how AI is being applied creatively and ethically in a real-world business context.

Equal Opportunity:

Story Stream is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and interns.
