Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Internship Program - Summer 2024

Overview

The Hegi Family Career Development Center is excited to partner with local non-profit and private companies to host internships for students from diverse backgrounds. Interns will work with one or more organizations, assisting with various projects depending on their internship assignment.

Internship details

Hegi has worked to secure a variety of internship opportunities with unique deliverables. Rather than applying to a specific internship, students can apply for a DEI Internship and be matched with an employer.

Internship start and end date

The internship start date is June 3rd, and the end date is August 9th. All interns are expected to work an average of 15 hours per week for the entire 10-week internship. Some internship opportunities may require limited weekend and evening hours. If applicable, that information will be provided to you during the internship offer period. If selected for the program, you will work with your employer to create a schedule that accommodates both your and the employer's schedule.

Compensation

Total compensation can vary based on the company or organization. Interns will be compensated at an hourly rate of $15 per hour. Payment structure and total compensation will be shared when an intern receives an offer letter.

Selection Process

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply on or before the priority deadline of March 22nd, but applications will remain open until April 7th at 11:59 pm. Submissions turned in by the priority deadline will be provided preference in the matching process.

The DEI Internship program follows a detailed matching process. To streamline the internship process and best match the candidates' desired learning outcomes to community partner needs, the Hegi Family Career Development Center will match interns with the position of best fit. This will be based on both the desired learning outcomes/goals of the applicant and the needs of the community employer. Upon a successful match, students will sign an offer letter provided by the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Employers will receive the intern's resume and short question answers indicating the intern's goals and desired outcomes from the internship experience. You may be asked to interview with a potential organization or company. All communication for the interview will be conducted through the Hegi Family Career Development Center. Candidates will be given proper notice to prepare for an interview.

Application Process

Interested applicants will complete a two-part application process. Part 1 is the DEI job application via Handshake. Part 2 is the DEI Qualtrics form. Listed below is the part 2 form for your reference.

Part 1 of the application on Handshake will consist of applicants learning the logistics and details of the internship program and submitting their resume.

Part 2 of the application on Qualtrics will be sharing your interest in the DEI Internship Program and answering a brief questionnaire and essay questions. SMU staff will review application materials and match candidates with employers.
